How your house can enter the 21st century no matter when it was built

Home heating is a major expense for RI families, who rely on gas or oil to heat some of the oldest, draftiest, homes in the country. But what’s to be done? Turns out, quite a lot. By adding some insulation, and converting my 1920s colonial to heat pumps, I now live in a more comfortable, more valuable, more energy efficient house that costs less to maintain, even though it has air conditioning in every room. The future of home heating and cooling has arrived, and it’s a lower pollution future that will get even cleaner over time. Join the conversation and learn how your house can enter the 21st century no matter when it was built.

Spreading Cheer- The story of What Cheer Flower Farm
Saturday, April 1st
12:30pm – 1:15pm

What Cheer Flower Farm is a nonprofit dedicated to bringing solace, joy and healing to the people of Rhode Island via flowers as well as supporting our local floral economy via job training.

We grow, rescue and give away 100,000 flowers per year and are on track to expand to giving away 300,000 flowers per year in the next five years. We never sell flowers – all are given away freely via our network of local nonprofits and organizations serving Rhode Islanders including hospitals, senior services, recovery centers, shelters, hospices and food pantries.

Shannon Kingsley & Pat Foley
ReSeeding Rhode Island initiative
Saturday, April 1st
2:00pm – 2:30pm

A plan to increase the availability of plants grown from locally sourced wild native seeds.

As native plant enthusiasts, we have long been aware of how important native plants are to creating ecologically sound habitats, ones that will support the local bugs, bees, and butterflies, the beasts and birds that depend on them, and even the microbes and fungi dwelling in the soil below them.

Now, we are coming to realize that we need truly local plant species—that is, ecotypes that have coevolved with the local fauna and are genetically suited to meet the unique needs of all the occupants of a particular habitat.
